"Are" quotation marks "really" necessary?

Houston Venezia: "not really" in todays society the word "like" is used to reference a direct quote

Sheldon Lally: Quotations can be important depending on the situation and style of writing taking place. It really is a sign of respect in writing that people take the time and energy to note where bits and pieces come from. ;)

Barrett Alosa: I think it remains important to indicate when you are using another person's thoughts and words. Quotation marks indicate a quotation from another person, and allow an author to attribute these to the original author. This avoids intellectual dishonesty and plagiarism.

Elsie Resner: No.

Christy Tirabassi: Idk, but the air quotation marks are really cute, I think ...lol ...

Riley Migl: yess...lol...they show that ur using a quote...of course they are lol :P
