Sherri Drakos: This is the post I have written a few months back. It is called ' The X Factor'.I am going to do a discussion that involves scientific thinking. The reason of this discussion is to bridge science and Buddhism. People with scientific way of thinking will only take notice of Buddhism if we can show Buddhism can be scientifically discussed. For those who think science and Buddhism should not be mixed, please ignore the discussion. When we were young and studied Mathematics, we always use a letter X to represent unknown factor. Let’s say the X factor. If we want to find the true value of X factor, we need to work it out from the known or given factors. So there will be given factors, and depending on those given factors, we need to find a method or function to get the value of X factor. The summary of above i! s that if we want to find something unknown to us, we need to work out ! form things known to us. That was what Buddha exactly did.He was not happy with the way samsara was cycling. But, he wanted to find something not related to samsara ( The X factor or unknown state). He looked for the known factors to work out the X factor. The given factors he found out were five group of khandas( physical, mental, feeling, perception and mental elements) that made us as living beings. Now, he had got the given factors to work out the X factor. He needed a method to use the given factors. He discovered four methods to carry out. They are: 1. Physical meditation2. Feeling meditation3. Cause and effect meditation4. Mental meditation We start with physical meditation, as physical matter is very friendly with us but there are catches in using physical matter as a meditation object. I will discuss these catches sometimes in the future. So, if we can follow the proper methodology in using the five given Khandas, we will get the X factor (Nivi! rna) sooner or later.
